How Do I Write A Hook?

How do you write a hook for a chapter?

Put simply, a hook is something that's interesting enough to get the reader's attention and make them want to read on.

Sometimes when you're telling a story, it helps to start in the middle of the action, perhaps with a cliffhanger, an immediate peril, or a situation so improbable that the reader instantly wants to know how it has come to be.

At other times it might not work to start that way. Instead you can start with an anecdote that’s amusing or provocative, with a parable, with a quotation, or with a statistic that will make the reader’s head jerk back, like WTF?

The fact is that your hook can be anything you like… as long as it gets the reader hooked. Literally.
