Fire your Ghostwriter

What if I don't like my ghostwriter?

If you haven’t hired them yet, don’t. And if you have hired them, fire them. Writing a book is hard enough, even with a guide. You're not going to get very far if you and the ghost writer don't get along.

Part of the ghostwriter’s job is like being a barrista, a waitress, or an air steward: they have to make you feel at home, make you feel valued, and make you feel that they are as invested in your story as they would be in their own.

If those things aren't happening, then that relationship has no future. How can you trust someone to write your story in the best way possible if you don’t feel comfortable with them?

If you feel it, then you can be sure that your ghost writer feels it too.  There’s no fun in writing a book in which you’re not interested.

Bite the bullet. Lean in. Fire them.

You'll both be happier in the short term and in the long term.

And I should know: Getting fired happens to the best of us.

(PS. Don't be afraid to ask them to recommend someone to take their place.)
