Frequently Asked Questions
Why Use a Ghostwriter?
Even if writing comes easily to you, writing a book is hard. If writing doesn’t come easily, it’s almost impossible.
Just because you’re not a natural writer doesn’t mean your ideas, stories and wisdom aren’t worth sharing. You just need help to write them down. A ghostwriter translates that idea at the back of your mind into a structure that will work for a book. Then you write it … together.
Why Use Me?
I’ve ghostwritten memoirs, thought leadership, social studies and business history. I’ve covered subjects including:
• transformational leadership
• management consultancy
• personal development
• business culture
• family history
• marketing
• personal finance
• resort development
• real estate
I’ve helped all sorts of people write their book … perhaps you’re next.
How Much does It Cost?
It depends on the project. Some books are more complicated than others. Some authors want the ghostwriter to do more work, and some want them to work faster.
My fees range from $50,000 to $70,000 for a 50,000-word book.
For comparison, Forbes Magazine in June 2023 reported that the average for a standard 50,000-word business book is $75,000.
How Long Will It Take?
That depends on how long you want it to take and much time you have available for the project. The more time you have available, the faster the process.
The overall process usually takes around nine to twelve months, from the initial calls to the printed book. Some books take far longer. Others take far less time. If the author has a particular deadline, it might be possible to write and print a book within six months—but I do charge a premium fee for such a short turnaround.
What If There Are Holes in My Story?
Authors often know things but don’t have time to research them. They show up on calls and say, ‘I’ll have to think about this some more’ or ‘I need to do some more research’. No worries. I can do both of those things for you, the thinking and the research.
How Will I know if We’ll Get Along?
For a collaboration to work, the author and the ghostwriter need to get along so they can develop a relationship based on trust and honesty. It usually becomes apparent on the introductory phone call whether this is likely or not, so you can decide then if I’m the right ghostwriter for you.
Can You Help With Getting My Book Published?
No, I only do the writing. But I can point you in the direction of trusted publishing professionals who will take your book through the design and production stages, and help with promotion and marketing. The ballpark costs of getting from a final manuscript to a printed book range from $10,000–$20,000.
Why Are You a Ghostwriter?
I started helping authors when I was an editor. I’d ask them to add more information on a particular subject, and they’d ask me to write something myself. But to make it sound like them. I wrote passages, then chapters, then whole books. I discovered that writing in other people’s voices was my superpower. I also discovered that I loved being of service to authors who didn’t find it as easy to write things as I did. I loved helping them create the books they had in their minds. So I made it my profession.
Wouldn’t you prefer to write your own books?
Been there, done that. Like every other writer, I’ve got a half-finished novel in my desk drawer. I’m content with the idea that it’ll stay there until someone clears the house after I’ve gone. When it’ll go in the skip.
I’m far happier helping authors spread wisdom and insight that I know will help more people. Writing a book with or as someone else is more challenging than writing a book as yourself. For me, that makes it fun. (Weird, I know.)
